AAFES Shopping Spree

AAFES Subway Winners Sweep Up At JBLM

• JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash.

Two sweepstakes winners at the base here went on the shopping spree of a lifetime with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) after peeling winning game pieces from their Subway drink cups.

Air Force Capt. Cameron Lindsey and 62nd Aerial Port Squadron Safety and Security Manager John Draper each won a

$10,000 Exchange shopping spree in the Subway “Sip. Rip. Ultimate Trip” sweepstakes. Both winners went on their shopping sprees Sept. 4 at the McChord Exchange.

THE WINNERS

Draper (left in photo), an Air Force retiree, peeled his winning piece while grabbing a quick bite at the JBLM Express Subway, having forgotten his lunch that day.

“At first, I just thought the piece was just an entry into a drawing,” Draper said. “I went to the website and put in the code on the game piece, and it popped up that I was the winner. I would’ve been happy with a free sub; I couldn’t believe I’d actually won $10,000.”

Lindsey (right in photo), a C-17 pilot, peeled his winning game piece while on temporary duty travel to Ramstein AB, Germany, where he flew COVID-19 patients from Afghanistan and Iraq to the hospital in Germany. It was the first game piece he’d pulled during the sweepstakes.

“I knew the sweepstakes was going on because I saw the sign out front; that’s why I bought a large drink,” Lindsey said. “I thought I’d try for a free foot-long or something like that, but I ended up getting a lot more.”

Draper’s haul included a refrigerator, a washer and dryer set, a computer and some Christmas gifts for friends and family. Lindsey, meanwhile, picked up a mattress, dryer, laptop, TV and more.

DESERVING WINNERS

“This is the shopping spree of a lifetime, and our winners’ service to this nation truly makes them deserving of this prize,” said JBLM Exchange General Manager Michael Einer. “That’s why the Exchange offers sweepstakes like this: to show those who work so hard to defend our country that their efforts are appreciated.”

Part of the Exchange’s 125th anniversary celebration, the Subway “Sip. Rip. Ultimate Trip” sweepstakes gives warfighters and their families the chance to win prizes such as dream vacations, shopping sprees, gift cards and more with peel-and-win game pieces attached to beverage cups at participating Exchange Subway locations.
